Pollution load (metal trace elements and sodium chloride) transfer dynamics at water-sediment interface in road retention basins

Résumé

During severe winter periods, road deicer is used to be applied on roadways (in France, mainly salt, NaCl) in order to maintain the safety of users. In order to reduce the transfer of road pollutants to the environment, retention ponds recover road runoff. However, the mechanisms of NaCl transfer inside these basins and its impact on their pollution are still unknown. A field study was carried out during the winter of 2016-2017 to assess the hydrological and chemical processes that influence NaCl transfer and its impact on particulate road pollution. This study revealed a low load of road deicer fluxes by the retention basin (only 19% of the mass of salt spread on the roadway), as well as a low retention into it (29% of the entering salt in the basin was retained). A large increase in the amount of salt applied (9 t) resulted in a pollution load increase fixed on suspended matter content entering the basin by a factor of 4. This increase then leads to an increase in the load of fixed metal pollutants to these particles. Although this increase is visible on the input, no reduction in particle treatment efficiency was observed during this winter (the output concentration is lower than 2 mg.L-1).
